This Just In — Jose Offerman Is Psycho…

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

According to the AP, Former major league All-Star Jose Offerman was suspended indefinitely Wednesday, a day after he went wild in the minors and hit the opposing pitcher and catcher with his bat.

Offerman was charged with two counts of second-degree assault — the catcher sustained a concussion and the pitcher had a broken finger. Offerman posted $10,000 bond and was due in Bridgeport Superior Court on Aug. 23.

Geez…

Bobby Cox Sets Ejection Record…

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

Bobby, no one can argue like you…

Now, you have been immortalized.

The Atlanta Braves manager was thrown out by home-plate umpire Ted Barrett for arguing a called third strike on Chipper Jones to end the fifth inning against the San Francisco Giants.

It was the 132nd ejection of Cox’s career, eclipsing the mark that McGraw set during his Hall of Fame career.

Congrats Bobby. Whether it is due to

Phil Rizzuto Passes Away…

Tuesday, August 14th, 2007

Phil Rizzuto, the Hall of Fame shortstop during the Yankees’ dynasty years and beloved by a generation of fans for exclaiming “Holy cow!” as a broadcaster, died today. He was 89.

His nickname was “Scooter”.

I remember him from back in the day from doing the “Money Store” commericals as a kid, and he calling games on TV, but he was a fine player and a good person.

Rest in peace, Phil.

Tuesday, August 14th, 2007

Placido Polanco of the Detroit Tigers set a major league record for second basemen by playing his 144th straight game without an error in a 7-2 loss to the Oakland Athletics on Monday night.

Baseball Umpires Racist?

Tuesday, August 14th, 2007

Uh, oh. Read this from Time Magazine…

A study released on Monday by researchers at McGill, Texas and Auburn universities suggests that umpires calling major-league baseball games are more likely to call strikes in favor of pitchers who share their race or ethnicity.

Tuesday, August 14th, 2007

According to the AP, With his place in home run history secure, Barry Bonds says next season likely will be his last. Bonds previously talked about playing in 2008. On Monday, the San Francisco slugger looked toward retirement.

Oh joy.

Viva La Gagne; Eric Gagne Blows 2 Games in Baltimore, Yanks Only 4 From First in the AL East…

Monday, August 13th, 2007

The Boston Red Sox thought trading for Eric Gange would make a great bullpen even better.

Well, they might want to start worrying

Eric Gagne blew his second lead in three days, opening the door for the Orioles’ to come back, 6-3 win over the Red Sox yesterday.

With the Yankees surging, the loss has Boston just 4 games up on the Yanks in the AL East.

Jenks Close to Breaking Consecutive Batters Retired Record…

Monday, August 13th, 2007

Bobby Jenks is good — in fact, so good he’s close to breaking a record.

He pitched a perfect ninth for Chicago, breaking David Wells ‘ American League record and tying the major league record of 41 straight batters retired. Jim Barr also set down 41 straight for San Francisco in 1972.

Congrats Bobby!

Matt Murphy May Not Sell Bonds’ Record Breaking Homer…

Friday, August 10th, 2007

Perhaps Matt Murphy, who caught Barry Bonds’ record breaking 756th home ball may keep it.

Huh?

According to the AP, he said “Part of me wants to keep it. It’s the greatest American sports accomplishment in history,” Murphy said Thursday on NBC’s Today Show. “Part of me might want to sell it, but I really am leaning towards keeping it. It’s just too valuable, sentimental.”

The Rocket Suspended…

Friday, August 10th, 2007

* - photo from the AP…

Due to the events of this week in Toronto, someone had to pay the price.

This time, it is the Rocket.

Roger Clemens was suspended for five games Thursday and New York Yankees manager Joe Torre for one, the fallout from the Rocket hitting Toronto’s Alex Rios with a pitch this week.

The Triumphant Return of Rick Ankiel…

Friday, August 10th, 2007

Rick Ankiel made a dramatic return to the major leagues after nearly leaving the game due to his troubles on the mound. After a three year absence, he’s back — this time as a reserve outfielder.

In a scene of out a movie, he hit three-run homer in his first game back in the major leagues, helping Joel Pineiro and the Cardinals to a 5-0 victory over the San Diego Padres on Thursday night at Busch Stadium.

I saw the replay on Sportscenter — one powerful moment.

In a summer of scandals, doping, and craziness, Ankiel’s hit was something to believe in, not only as a fan, but a person.

It shows if you can put your mind into something, you can overcome…

Pedro Martinez, on the Road Back…

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

Well, Pedro Martinez is on the road back to the majors; however, he’s hit a few bumps on the way.

The smallish righty pitcher, one of the best this generation, with plenty of spitfirehas been out for most of the year. He got lit up as he started for Class A St. Lucie on Wednesday and allowed six runs and five hits in three innings with five strikeouts against Lakeland in a Florida State League contest.

Good luck Petey…

The Toughest S.O.B. in Baseball…

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

And I though Chase Utley was tough playing in a ball game where he had a broken hand…

Well, apparently, according to the AP Colorado Rockies pitcher Jason Hirsh broke his right leg — and kept on pitching against the Milwaukee Brewers. X-rays revealed the fracture Wednesday, a day after Milwaukee’s J.J. Hardy lined a ball off Hirsh’s leg during the first inning of Colorado’s 11-4 win.

Yikes.

Be well, Jason. You’re a tough S.O.B. for pitching on a broken leg…

David Wells into Retirement? Is this the Last We’ll See of Boomer?

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

Could it be? Is this the last we might see of David Wells, aka Boomer.

According to the AP, David Wells is finished with his hometown San Diego Padres, and he’s set to be released any day.

General manager Kevin Towers said Wednesday that the Padres will cut ties with the struggling 44-year-old on Thursday in order to activate All-Star Chris Young from the disabled list.

If he’s indeed done, it’s been a colorful career for one of my favorite pitchers, on and off the field.
