The Steinbrenners Whine As To Why The Yankees Aren’t In First Place

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

The rich kids are whining about their favorite play set, the Yankees…

Hal Steinbrenner emerged from a closed-door meeting with manager Joe Girardi and general manager Brian Cashman yesterday to say he was disappointed in the New York Yankees’ performance this year, yet reluctant to trade prospects for veterans in hopes of a spark.

He cited injuries, plus inconsistent hitting and pitching. He specifically mentioned the performances of young pitchers Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy, counted on to be regulars in the rotation. Both are on the disabled list after combining to go 0-7 in 15 appearances.

“The young pitchers at the beginning of year,” he said, “it was upsetting at times. It wasn’t what we thought.”

Hal and Hank Steinbrenner, the brothers who took over supervision of the team last fall from their father, owner George Steinbrenner, agreed during the offseason with Cashman’s recommendation that they keep prospects and not trade for two-time Cy Young winner Johan Santana. Just this week, Cleveland dealt CC Sabathia to Milwaukee and Oakland sent Rich Harden to the Chicago Cubs. The Yankees’ involvement in those trade talks appeared to be minimal.

Look, the Yankees are struggling right noe because of an old team, a struggling bullpen and poor starting pitching (got it?)

So Long, Tiger Stadium

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

Demolition crews smashed the walls of Tiger Stadium, punching through to the interior of the ballpark that stood for decades, as they intensified their efforts to bring down the venerable park. The Detroit contractor and MCM Management Corp. of suburban Bloomfield Hills started demolition of the ballpark last week. They expect to make an estimated $1 million by selling scrap from the park. City officials say an Aug. 1 deadline still stands for a nonprofit group to raise enough funds to preserve the field and part of the stadium between first and third base.

Outfield walls cleared by Yankees legend Mickey Mantle as well as Tigers sluggers Norm Cash and Cecil Fielder began to come down as contractors intensified their efforts to bring down the venerable park.

Backhoes and excavators, sometimes hard to see through dust and spraying water, whizzed around the site, picking up debris and dumping it in oversize bins. During one flurry, an excavator smashed through the exterior wall beyond left field, throwing support girders to the side.

The scene was tough to take for longtime Tigers fan Chas Matreal and his 23-year-old son, Ryan.

“All beautiful memories,” Chas Matreal said. “It is something beautiful that we’re destroying, and it’s history.”

The 49-year-old bricklayer from Milford, Mich., said he attended 400 to 500 games at Tiger Stadium, many with his own father, starting in 1966.

“Demolition means progress,” declared signs on a construction vehicle at the site. But Matreal disagreed, saying priceless memories are being lost.

“It’s a natural museum of a hundred years that they’re destroying,” he said.

David Ortiz On The Mend?

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

Slugger David Ortiz reported no pain, a day after he took his first on-field batting practice since injuring a tendon in his left wrist almost six weeks ago. “That was good news,” manager Terry Francona said. “We’ll see how he feels at the end of the week, and then we’ll go from there.” Ortiz will continue to take batting practice with the team and work up to the point at which he can test his wrist with a swing similar to the one he injured it on in the ninth inning May 30 at Camden Yards against the Orioles.

Bonds 756th Home Run Ball Reaches Hall of Fame

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

Oh lookie, Barry Bonds’ ball is finally going to the Hall of Fame…

Now branded with an asterisk, the ball Barry Bonds launched for his record 756th home run nearly a year ago landed last night in the Hall of Fame.

The souvenir arrived in Cooperstown, N.Y., after a strange day of back-and-forth statements between its owner, fashion designer Marc Ecko, and the shrine.

“We are very happy to receive the baseball as a donation, and not as a loan,” Hall spokesman Brad Horn said. “We look forward to adding [it] to our permanent collections.”

A driver walked up the front steps of the Hall, handing over the ball and a letter from Ecko saying it was an unconditional donation.

Bonds, then with the San Francisco Giants, broke Hank Aaron’s career homer record Aug. 7.

Ecko paid $752,467 for the prize in an online auction in September. Soon after, he asked fans to vote in an Internet poll on what he should do with the ball.

The winner: brand it with an asterisk, to reflect the steroid allegations surrounding Bonds, and give it to the Hall.

The ball indeed was marked, with the five-pronged asterisk dye-cut into the cowhide, from stitch to stitch where “Major League Baseball” is printed.

After months of discussions, the Hall said earlier yesterday that talks with Ecko had “unfortunately reached an impasse.”

A-Rod, A Lying, Cheating Man?

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

Athletes have cheated on their spouses since time began, but when your wife just gave birth and you portray an image of a family man, it turns off a lot of people. Alex Rodriguez may have now move officially into creep territory this week.

Well, he and his wife have separated less than three months after the birth of their second daughter, the New York Daily News reported. The newspaper posted the article on its Web site amid reports linking Rodriguez to Madonna. He declined to address the topic on three occasions Tuesday.

The Daily News reported Wednesday night, citing an anonymous source, that Rodriguez and his wife, Cynthia, had separated after having “problems” for about three months. Cynthia Rodriguez’s mother, Evangeline Scurtis, denied a report on a gossip Web site that her daughter had gone on a romantic getaway with musician Lenny Kravitz in Paris. Kravitz issued a statement yesterday denying the getaway.

Bud Selig Thinks Feds Seizing Results Somehow Drags MLB Drug Testing

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

Another story on steroids, blah, blah…

Baseball’s drug-testing program was threatened when federal prosecutors seized player records and samples four years ago, baseball commissioner Bud Selig said in a letter to Congress that was released yesterday.

The seizure of the 2003 test results jeopardized the program’s confidentiality and caused a delay in the start of testing in 2004, Selig and union head Donald Fehr told Reps. Henry Waxman and Tom Davis, leaders of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.

“Major League players faced the realistic prospect of criminal prosecution based on evidence from a drug test that they were promised would be anonymous,” Selig wrote in his letter from last Friday, which was hand-delivered to the committee. “The seizure undermined representations made to players that drug testing records generally would be confidential. … It is no exaggeration to say that the seizure threatened the continued viability of the entire drug-testing program.”

The legality of the government’s seizure is under dispute. A three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals largely upheld the government’s actions, reaffirming a decision it made in December 2006. But the entire 9th Circuit has been asked to rehear the case, which could wind up before the Supreme Court.

Baseball, just do what is expected and move on from this…
