A Red Sox Fan Tries to Curse The Yankees By Placing A Red Sox Shirt Underneath Some Concrete At The New Yankee Stadium…

by Anthony Amobi

This is crazy, if you have not heard the story — from Youtube:

A construction worker helping to build the new Yankees Stadium in New York is a Boston Red Sox fan — so he buried a Red Sox T-shirt underneath the concrete used for the visitors’ clubhouse (it has been since reported by the Yankees’ PR Department to be not true, ala an urban legend - who knows.

However, this attempt to curse the Yankees, according to baseball history, will not work. Countdown’s Keith Olbermann explains.

Alas, this is a great story. You could not make this up…

Don’t Tase Me Bro: Rays Pitcher Al Reyes Partied Hard, Gets Tased, Ended Up In The Slammer…

by Anthony Amobi

IMG_3888

From the files of, “If you made this up, I would not believe you”…

From the AP: ays reliever Al Reyes apparently had a less- than-happy birthday, as the Tampa Bay pitcher was arrested early Friday morning after a fight in which he allegedly spit blood on people and was tasered twice by a police officer.

Tampa police issued a release Friday confirming the arrest. According to the release Reyes, who was celebrating his 38th birthday Thursday night, fell against a ceramic pot inside a bar around 2:30 a.m., and thought that another bar patron, Eduardo Mora, pushed him. This led to a dispute with Mora, who punched the righty reliever in the face.

Bouncers at the bar then restrained Mora while Reyes, whom the report said appeared to be intoxicated, “began to spit blood on the people in the area and began to swing his arms about.”

Bouncers tried to subdue the 6-foot-1, 240-pound reliever, but were unable to. A Tampa police officer yelled at Reyes to stop, but he apparently did not, and the officer tasered Reyes, knocking him to the ground.

Reyes then started to get back up, and the officer tasered him a second time before the Rays pitcher finally complied with police orders. Reyes was arrested and charged with affray, while Mora was arrested and charged with battery. Both men were released on their own recognizance.

Fun, fun. Yikes.

Fausto Carmona Extended With Cleveland…

by Anthony Amobi

Another young pitcher is rich; however, the team he pitches for may have gotten themselves an amazing deal…

Fausto Carmona, a surprising 19-game winner last season, agreed yesterday to a four-year, $15 million contract with the Indians, a deal that would be worth at least $43 million if Cleveland exercises three club options.

Red Sox Without Lowell For A Bit: On the 15 Day DL…

by Anthony Amobi

The Red Sox had a major offensive blow as World Series Most Valuable Player Mike Lowell was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a sprained left thumb. He was injured on the first at-bat of the game Wednesday night when he fielded Ivan Rodriguez’s grounder and threw him out.

New Drug Testing Procedures Announced; Gibbons and Guillen’s Suspensions Recinded

by Anthony Amobi

Sometimes in order to make progress, you have to let things go — like letting those who broke the rules off the hook. Looks like although Jay Gibbons is unemployed, he won’t be facing punishment (if he is ever in uniform again) — the same goes for current Royal, Jose Guillen.

At least baseball is getting there in terms of their drug testing…

Baseball players and owners have agreed to amend their drug agreement, a decision that allows for more frequent testing and eliminates 15-day suspensions assessed in December against Jose Guillen and Jay Gibbons.

The deal, reached after months of negotiations, strengthens the authority the independent administrator has over the drug program. But baseball did not heed advice from the World Anti-Doping Agency and turn drug testing over to an outside agency.

Let’s see how this works out, although any player who gets caught these day must be real stupid…

Ozzie Guillen, The Mouth of Chicago, Fined For His Remarks…

by Anthony Amobi

IMGP3244

Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen was fined an undisclosed amount by Major League Baseball on Friday for his recent remarks regarding umpire Phil Cuzzi. Oh boy, he’s at it again…

Here’s what he said…

Guillen was ejected by Cuzzi in the third inning of Monday’s home opener, which came after he argued Cuzzi’s called second strike on Paul Konerko. It was Guillen’s 13th ejection since he was hired by the club in 2004, and his second with Cuzzi behind the plate. Guillen was also given the hook on July 31, 2007 during an ugly 16-3 loss to the New York Yankees.

“I don’t like that guy (Cuzzi) behind the plate, and I’m going to let him know,” said Guillen, during Wednesday’s pregame meeting with the media. “It’s one reason if you don’t like me as a man and what I do, I respect that. But if you don’t like me, and all of a sudden you’re going to take it out on my players, you’re wrong.

“That’s unprofessional, and I just let him know I didn’t like him the first day I saw him, and I think he feels the same way about me. Every time he’s behind the plate, we might have a problem. We might. We have. I think the last couple times behind the plate, we have a problem.”

Guillen also said he plans to talk with the league office again about the problems with Cuzzi, because in Guillen’s mind, an ejection is imminent with Cuzzi behind the plate during any White Sox game.

“You can ask my bench coach [Joey Cora],” Guillen added. “As soon as I saw him, I say, ‘You’re going to handle this game today because I know I’m going to be ejected’ because that’s how I feel about that situation.

“I don’t have any problem with the umpires over the course of my career,” he continued. “But we’re going to put it on the table. I got good sleep last night. I will spend all my money for him. I don’t care.”

I like what Ozzie Guillen brings to the game; however, the more he keeps opening his mouth — the more trouble he’ll get into and he’ll eventually find himself out of a job.

Agents Steering Players Towards Drugs?

by Anthony Amobi

Perhaps a few agents might be more interested in making their clients are buff more than anything — well, of course besides the bucks and getting share…

A federal indictment unsealed Wednesday charged that unidentified agents for baseball players steered clients to a California physician linked in media reports to supplying Troy Glaus and Scott Schoeneweis with illegal performance-enhancing drugs.

No players or agents were mentioned by name in the 11-count indictment returned by a grand jury against Dr. Ramon Scruggs and two of his alleged associates at the New Hope Health Center in Costa Mesa, Calif.

Schoeneweis is represented by Scott Boras, and Glaus by Mike Nicotera.

“I have no knowledge of this medical practitioner or any relationship that he has with any of our clients,” Boras said. “We have never referred any of our clients to a wellness center.”

Nicotera did not respond to a telephone message or e-mail.

…The indictment, dated March 5, was unsealed in U.S. District Court in San Jose, Calif. It contains counts involving distribution of steroids, conspiracy, misbranding drugs, money laundering and conspiracy to commit money laundering. The indictment covers activity from September 2000 to May 2003, and charges the defendants with illegally distributing drugs to baseball players, law-enforcement officers and others.

“It was a further part of the conspiracy that, on occasion, sports representation agents for professional baseball players referred their client-players to defendants Scruggs, Danto and MacPherson for the purpose of obtaining anabolic steroids and other drugs which those individuals knew to be banned by Major League Baseball and therefore unavailable to the players through lawful medical channels absent the illegal prescriptions provided by Scruggs,” the indictment said.

Major League Baseball said on Dec. 6 there was insufficient evidence to penalize Glaus or Schoeneweis for any violation of the sport’s drug agreement with the players’ association. Rob Manfred, MLB’s executive vice president for labor relations, declined comment on the indictment as did Gene Orza, the union’s chief operating officer.

Signature has been under investigation by the district attorney in Albany, N.Y.

A stipulated decision of the Medical Board of California on March 2, 2007, said that without any admissions, Scruggs was placed on 35 months probation. He was charged with “violating federal or state drug statutes, prescribing over the Internet without a prior good faith examination and medical indication, repeated negligent acts, gross negligence, incompetence, and failure to maintain adequate and accurate medical records in the care and treatment of multiple patients; and unprofessional conduct by failing to take a board-ordered examination.”

Yikes. What the hell?

Steinbrenner Sons Named Co-Chairmen of the Yankees…

by Anthony Amobi

As if we didn’t know who was already running the Yankees, here’s this:

George Steinbrenner’s sons, Hank and Hal, have been named co-chairpersons of the New York Yankees.

Steinbrenner’s sons took over day-to-day operations of the Yankees last year.

“I am excited to announce these titles,” the elder Steinbrenner said in a statement. “I am pleased to work with my two sons, Hal and Hank. With me, they will jointly oversee the club on a day-to-day basis.”

In addition, Steinbrenner’s daughters, Jennifer Steinbrenner Swindal and Jessica Steinbrenner, as well as wife Joan Steinbrenner were given the title of vice chairpersons.

“I am also gratified to recognize the leadership of my daughter Jenny in the club’s charitable endeavors and her involvement with new stadium matters; as well as the contributions of my wife Joan and daughter Jessica in assisting me.

“Together with my executive team, the New York Yankees are prepared for the future and the exciting challenges the next several years will bring.”

Dmitri Young on the DL

by Anthony Amobi

After an amazing 2007, NL Comeback Player of Year, Dmitri Young’s 2008 campaign isn’t going too well. He went on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday because of a lower back sprain, and the team will recall catcher Johnny Estrada from his rehab assignment at Triple-A Columbus.

A lot has been made of his conditioning as he tries to struggle with diabetes, thus, this is another setback for a man who made an amazing turnaround in his career.
