Finally: According to the MLB News Blog, “The Boston Red Sox are nearing the completion of their five-year, $70 million contract with J.D. Drew, a deal that was announced by agent Scott Boras in December but delayed due to concerns over the outfielder’s right shoulder. “We’ve moved forward on this and fully expect to have it completed in their near future,� Boras said Friday. The Red Sox reached a preliminary agreement with Drew at the baseball winter meetings on Dec. 5.�
* The Houston Astros on Friday added some depth by signing righthander Brian Moehler to a minor league contract.
* Outfielder Trot Nixon agreed Friday to a $3 million, one-year contract with the Cleveland Indians.
* The Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday avoided arbitration with Shawn Chacon, agreeing to terms on a one-year contract.
* The Milwaukee Brewers on Friday avoided arbitration with Tony Graffanino, signing the infielder to a one-year contract.
* According to the MLB News Blog, “Three days after reliever Fernando Rodney and the Detroit Tigers agreed to a one-year contract, they decided to make it a two-year deal. The 29-year-old right-hander will get $2.7 million under the contract announced Friday. Rodney agreed to lower this year’s salary by $50,000 to $1 million and will get $1.7 million in 2008.�
* Notre Dame’s Jeff Samardzija decided to give up football and stay with baseball. He was projected as a first-round pick in the NFL draft this April, but agreed to a $10 million, five-year contract to pitch for the Chicago Cubs today. He may never make it to the majors, but the money is guaranteed.
