* According to various news outlets, Phillies minor league manager John Russell is set to be named manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday.
* According to the AP, the Chicago Cubs and Daryle Ward exercised a $1.2 million mutual option for next season, but the team declined options on outfielder Cliff Floyd and pitcher Steve Trachsel on Saturday.
* Slammin’ Sammy Sosa had a productive year in ‘07 with hit 21 home runs with 92 RBI this season for Texas and will return to playing baseball if the price is right. He wants to play in the majors next year, provided a team offers him a contract for at least $7 million. He’s not worth $7 million, but he’s definitely still a productive paper with some pop; however, he’s now an all-or-nothing player who relies on his power only.
* The Boston Red Sox exercised their 2008 options on righthanded pitchers Tim Wakefield and Julian Tavarez on Friday.
