‘Round the Bases
* Robert Nutting was given approval Thursday by baseball owners to take control of the Pittsburgh Pirates from Kevin McClatchy, who will remain the team’s chief executive officer. Hopefully the move will get the Pirates back to respectability.
* Sammy Sosa and the Texas Rangers are in negotiations toward a minor league deal. A deal has not been completed.
* The Reds are close to re-signing closer Eddie Guardado to a minor league contract and inviting him to spring training to battle for roster spot.
* The Dodgers have agreed to terms of a one-year contract with reliever Chin-Hui Tsao, formerly a top prospect in the Colorado Rockies organization.
* Tony Womack and the Washington Nationals have agreed to a minor league deal that would pay the veteran infielder $600,000 if he makes the 40-man roster.
