‘Round The Bases…

* Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Carlos Zambrano left Monday’s 4-3 10-inning loss to the Milwaukee Brewers with cramping in his pitching arm.

* Cleveland Indians catcher Victor Martinez left his team’s 10-8 win over the Chicago White Sox on Monday with a left hamstring injury

* Tony Gwynn’s sacrifice fly in the 10th inning was the difference as Milwaukee clipped the Chicago Cubs, 4-3, in the season opener for both teams at Wrigley Field. On a rainy day that saw lengthy delays, Kosuke Fukudome slammed a tying three-run homer in the ninth inning in his major-league debut for the Cubs, who dropped their second straight home opener. Bob Howry (0-1) took the loss in one inning of relief.

* Monday’s season-opener at Busch Stadium between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Colorado Rockies was postponed due to rain.

* Johan Santana’s debut in a New York Mets uniform was a successful one as he gave up just two runs to help the Mets to a 7-2 win over the Florida Marlins in the season-opener for both teams at Dolphin Stadium.

* Carlos Gomez, one of the players traded from the Mets in the offseason and the person who took over for Torii Hunter in center field for the Twins, had two hits, a pair of stolen bases and scored twice as Minnesota edged the Angels, 3-2, in the season opener for both teams.

* Reigning National League Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy threw seven shutout innings and drove in two runs to lead the San Diego Padres to a 4-0 win over the Houston Astros in the season opener for both teams.

* Franklin Gutierrez went 3-for-3 with a three-run homer and a walk, as the Cleveland Indians held off the Chicago White Sox, 10-8, in the season opener for both teams at Progressive Field.

* The Baltimore Orioles have signed infielder Alex Cintron to a minor league contract and assigned him to Triple-A Norfolk.

* Monday’s season-opener between the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees was postponed because of rain.
